Shipbuilding branch in Volgograd oblast is Historically represented by Volgograd Shipbuilding Plant founded in 1931. Soviet first five-year plan included the construction of transport vessels ‘river sea’ –type at the plant to provide the Russian main waterway – Volga among other 517 construction projects of the industrialization vast scheme of the country.

From the moment of its foundation the enterprise has built more than 500 different ships: for river, sea and mixed “river-sea” navigation conditions, bulk-oil tankers, trawlers-seiners, crane ships, oil recovery vessels, vessels for deep water diving operations, special cold storage ships for vegetable transportation, floating pumping stations for irrigation of dry regions in Kazakhstan, Turkmenia and the south of Russia. Moreover it has built 180 trawlers-seiners for seiners of the Far East and northern seas.

After the war the machinery production of the plant began to grow rapidly. The plant began to manufacture ship covers, ship doors, hatch covers for the whole shipbuilding branch.. In 1990s the plant started to perform overhaul reconditioning of trams, buses, trolleybuses. The plant set up the production of tanks for oil and gas complex, waist rails for the Russian Railroads, and it started to produce drilling equipment in 2005.

In 1989 the enterprise obtained the shipbuilding production certificate from English Lloyd, entered the international market and began to build vessels for export. Then we started to work with Det Norske Veritas (DNV), Bureau Veritas  (BV) and Germanischer Lloyd (GL).

During that period the plant manufactured ten hulls of chemical carriers for the Netherlands, series of dry-cargo ships for mixed navigation area for Germany. In 2001 the plant implemented the integrated product quality control system and obtained the certificate of compliance for the product quality system with the international ISO 9001 standards. That gave the opportunity to get an order from the oil company Lukoil for ten tankers construction with deadweight of 6620 ton.

In 2003-2006 the plant built series of dry-cargo ships for Turkish company Palmali. In 2005 the English Royal Institution of Naval Architects recognized the dry-cargo carriers of that project to be the best ships of this class.

The plant also constructed a series of four dry-cargo carriers for an Iranian company.

The plant has engineering and design capacity to build any vessels fitted with the most state-of-the-art equipment. Manufacturing capacity of the plant allows building of vessels 141m long, 17m wide, with 3500 ton launching mass, steel fabrication capacity to be 15000 ton/year. One of the main production units of the enterprise is the covered slipway where  four vessels can be constructed simultaneously within 24 hrs. The plant has all the necessary structural subdivisions, which make possible construction of modern vessels for different purposes.

JSC Volgograd Shipbuilding Plant has been added in the list of Strategic Enterprises of the Russian Federation. A Government’s defense order was formed and is being performed at the machinery division of the enterprise (Volgograd plant of special mechanical engineering LTD). Moreover the plant is manufacturing components for new generation rig derricks.

Now the total number of employees of the plant is 1475 persons. The enterprise is legally capable in sprite of existing encumbrances and significant accounts payable.

In 2010 wage arrears were liquidated for many months to employees of the plant. Some qualified specialists in the field of shipbuilding industry, who left for work at other shipyards, are ready to come back to the enterprise.

The new owner is diligently building up the order portfolio for 2010-2012, which will ensure full load of the enterprise and overcoming “breakeven point”.

The personnel of managers in the sphere of vessel building, material and technical supply, mechanical engineering and economic security have been enhanced.

As for development prospects of JSC Volgograd Shipbuilding Plant, stepping-up of the shipbuilding market should be pointed out on the whole. Now some major shipbuilding contracts are under consideration. Marketing department of the plant is doing purposeful work to find additional workload with orders for mechanic engineering, manufacturing of nonstandard equipment, metal structures.
